Mussenden Temple is located in the stunning coastal surroundings of Downhill Demesne near Castlerock in Northern Ireland, it stands proud on a 120 ft cliff top, high above the Atlantic Ocean. From this former library, dramatic views from the north-western coast of the Island of Ireland look across Magilligan Point, further right to the famous golfing and seaside town of Portrush and to the left, County Donegal.
The temple was built in 1785 and forms part of the Bishop of Derry and Earl of Bristol’s estate. Frederick Augustus Hervey, built this beautiful building as a summer library which was inspired by Roman architecture and named after his beloved cousin, Mrs Frideswide Mussenden. Around the top there is a Latin inscription which reads, ‘’Tis pleasant, safely to behold from shore, the troubled sailor, and hear the tempests roar’. The temple is now owned by the National Trust which carried out work in the 1990’s to protect the building.
