It’s time to say goodbye to 2017 and greet 2018 with open arms—but not without one last hurrah. Whether you’re celebrating with a close group of friends or your extended family (little ones, included!), here are a few ways you can reflect on the year that was and prepare to welcome the days ahead.
Make It All Fun with Games
Board games, charades, and cards can break the ice and set the tone for an evening to remember. Whether you have a wide range of ages to entertain or you’re looking to make fast friends out of new acquaintances, games can bring people together. Prepare a few of your favorites to kick off a casual celebration.
Honor Loved Ones
If you’re hosting a seated dinner, consider incorporating an ancient Irish tradition by setting a place in memory of a loved one who is no longer with your family. The action is likely to open the door for fond stories of the family member or friend to be shared.
Create a Memory Jar
Do you have a favorite memory from 2017? Perhaps you got married, welcomed a new family member or took the trip of a lifetime. Write these (and all the tales that accompany the event!) down and place them in a jar. Share the memories later in the evening and considering posting them in a book or journal to reflect on them in the coming years. Again, if you’re hosting a range of ages this is something in which everyone can take part.
Make a Toast
Of course, no New Year’s celebration is complete without a toast. (We love these crystal flutes from Galway to hold the bubbly!) Encourage guests to share their favorite stories from 2017 and also their wishes or dreams for the upcoming year.
Light Up the Night
End the evening by watching or creating a dazzling display of backyard fireworks. If you have limited space or local regulations forbid firework displays, ignite sparklers for a similar effect.
